What is a KenKen Puzzle?
A KenKen puzzle (also known as Calcudoku puzzle) is a mathematical and logic-based grid puzzle similar in nature to Sudoku. It was invented by Japanese math teacher Tetsuya Miyamoto. The name “KenKen” roughly means “cleverness-cleverness” in Japanese. It is often used in educational settings to improve logical reasoning and arithmetic skills.

Structure of a KenKen Puzzle
- Grid Size: Typically ranges from 3×3 to 9×9.
- Cages: The grid is divided into heavily outlined areas called cages.
- Numbers / Operations: Each cage has a target number and an operation (e.g., +, –, ×, ÷) indicating what result the numbers in that cage should produce.
- Digits: Numbers used range from 1 up to the size of the grid (e.g., 1-4 in a 4×4 puzzle).
- Rules:
- Each row and column must contain each digit exactly once (no repeats).
- The numbers within a cage must combine (using the specified operation) to reach the target number.
- Numbers can repeat within a cage but not within a row or column.
How to Solve
- Goal: Fill in the grid so that each row and each column has different numbers (no repeats).
- Cage Clues: Each cage (group of cells) has a target number and a math sign (+, –, ×, ÷). Use these clues to figure out what numbers go in the cage.
- One-Cell Cages: If a cage has only one square, just write the number shown—it’s already the answer.
- For Bigger Cages: Think about what number combinations work with the math sign and total. Remove any choices that don’t fit with the other numbers in the same row or column.
- Elimination: As you fill in more of the grid, it becomes easier to figure out what numbers can go in the empty cells.
- Final Check: Make sure every row and column has different numbers. Also, check that each cage adds, subtracts, multiplies, or divides to the correct number.
